Mastiha & History

– 5th Century BC: Hippocrates recommended it for its medicinal qualities as well as an excellent digestive and breath freshener.
– The Roman Years: The Roman Emperor Heliogabalus spiced his wine with Mastiha oil
– Byzantine years: Mastiha was declared the Emperor’s monopol. It was exported as a luxury product
– Genoan dominance: Mastiha trade flourishes : Constantinople, Rome, Paris, London, Alexandria, Damascus, Venice, Florence        & Marseille                                                                                                                                                                                                     ‑Ottoman Empire: The highest quality from each crop was sent East to the Sultan’s harem. His numerous wives considered it a rare delicacy with mystical purification.
